Allowing Windchill File System Management (WFS) to be set for a network drive

Allowing Windchill File System Management (WFS) to be set for a network drive

We are trying to look at using VDI (Virtual Workstations) with a mapped cache drive however it fails to connect as it know it's not a local drive. The local drive on the VDI set up gets wiped every time the users session is logged off. Windchill WGM allows the cache drive to be pointed to and works fine but cannot get the WFS to do the same. Can this be looked into and the functionality available?

This sounds like a good enhancement and our environment is have similar issues. I would like to see PTC start moving enhancements towards virtualization.

I am currently involved with several projects to setup and configure our CAD software packages on these types of virtualized environments...We have worked through a lot of the issues surrounding Graphics, and memory requirements. It feels like, at least at our company, due to the rise in cost and lack of available single user machine hardware, things seem to be shifting towards the old Mainframe/Terminal type setups that big companies used to deploy.

We were able to get around the WFS limitation for our AutoCAD/WWGM integration as the WFS is not required. We had to remove the WFS and we were able to support at least our AutoCAD users. We were attempting to do the same thing for our Solidworks users...however...the Solidworks/WWGM integration requires the use of the WFS...WWGM integration on a Virtualized Environment is not supported by PTC:

  • Here is an article last updated Jun 25-2020 - CS268511
    • Summary:
      • "Does PTC support virtualization for Windchill Workgroup Manager on hardware and virtualization platforms?
        • Not part of Windchill Workgroup Manager functionality
          • At this moment, PTC has no plans to support Desktop Virtualized Environments for the Windchill Workgroup Manager."

I for one hope that PTC, and other CAD Software Vendors, begin to see this shift to virtualization platforms and seriously consider getting on board.
