In ProjectLink we can only assign a task to users but not on role or group. By the way we are unable to perform load/capacity analysis on a team.
New product development planning is performed on 2 axis
Mid-term planning (12 - 24 month)
Short-term planning (0 - 12 month)
Depending this 2 axis for one specific task the resources workload forecast need is different
For mid-term planning the important is to have a view of global workload on a department (ex : Logistic) or a function (ex: Designer)
High level planning for management
For short-term planning the task is assigned to a specific person
Day to day resources management
Workshop / department resource planning
For several departments or workshops some activities can be performed indifferently by one or many people
The planning is performed only at department/workshop level
The activity completion and reporting has to be performed by any people from group /role
Before a new project starts we are able to say our Design Engineer Team (50 people) will have to perform a defined number of hours ( ex: 200h) on a task between 2 dates in 12 month. For the moment we are unable to say who will complete the task.
If we allocate a fraction of the total amount of hours (ex : 200 h / 50 = 4 h) on all Design Engineer Team members the workload of each people will be incorrect. And when we want to allocate the task to the correct people we will have to remove one by one the 49 others.
If we allocate the total amount of hours (ex : 200 h) on all Design Engineer Team members the load/capacity won't give us a correct value (ex :50 * 200 = 10000h instead of 200h).
