Better and faster User Experience to Open and View Documents directly in Windchill without download step

Better and faster User Experience to Open and View Documents directly in Windchill without download step

Currently Web applications like Google Drive and Microsoft SharePoint have capabilities which provide much better user experience (UX) when managing documents.

In the other hand in Windchill we have:

- Slow and too small Image Navigator utility, while Google Drive provides a very fast and much bigger document visualization which is useful for documents. Furthermore Image Navigator is not available for document attachments in documents.

- Time to open Creo View is too long, for those who just want to see document content. Creo View has much more capabilities than the ones users use more often. Usually users want to quickly see document content.

- Two steps to just open a document, you have first to download and the click in the folder to open or open from a dialog window. This is not a Lean approach.

I would say that other systems have evolved much faster (with less functionality) than Windchill to provide a a better user experience (UX). Athough general application layout has been greatly improved since version 10, object actions should have less mouse clicks. Convince about business value of Windchill is difficult when other systems provide much better User's Experience (UX) managing files/documents. Furthermore, extend PLM outside Engineering is always challenging because users compare with other systems simpler to use, although they do not have functionality WIndchill has.

When "editing application icon" (Word, Excel, ... icon in Search Resulst, tables and in document details window) is selected in Windchill user should have more alternatives than just downloading the document. Dowloading is just a system extra step which do not provide inmediate result and value to the user.

What I request is Right Mouse Button (RMB) click action when application icon is selected in order to select to open document directly in local application or view providing an image quick visualization in similar way as Google Drive does for Office, PDF, image and other file types. A few of most common actions of Actions drop-down menu in document details window should be available with such RMB click action on application content icon.

Windchill document Details window need a more modern make-up, quicker visualizacion capabilities and more productive for basic capabilities like view and open documents.

My message is "do simple things fast and easy" for open and view document content.

I totally agree. There is no reason to have a locally installed client application to view documents these days. This should be achievable via web service and delivered to the end user regardless of the device they are using. Please vote for this idea to help raise its priority.

Scott, Great comment and I agree with you too!

In addition to the user not needing the extra functionality of CreoView, it is slow, and VERY FICKLE on settings.  For example, if you turn off the adobe setting of open pdfs in browser (or turn off the IE adobe add-in...depending on what versions of each you have), than Creo View won't open at all returning various errors (e.g. "Failed to load the file.  Check the Adobe Acrobat or Adobe reader installation" or the 64-bit message, again depending on software versions).

It is very frustrating to experience these problems and then look at the CreoView thumbnail and wish it were just a little bit bigger to get the essential detail off of it!  I really hope for this feature sooner rather than later, because I imagine it will happen before PTC is able to fix the software interaction limitations between IE & Adobe...although I wouldn't mind being wrong!

Note that the behavior I described for CreoView in this post is not for CAD files, but for any document which uses Adobe to open in CreoView.  Using CreoView for CAD files work acceptably for us...just not for docs!

The technology is definitely available.  Seeing the upcoming Windchill Access App at PTC Live Global proved that.  Clean, simple, and interactive 3D visualization built right into the web page with no additional plugins or software required.  Very cool.

We are promoting Creo view as the tool to use to "view" documents and models in Windchill.  Often users only have some of the information of what they are looking for, so any enhancement to being able to quickly preview a document prior to opening the document in Creo view  would go a long way to raising the satisfaction level of many users.
