CPS00

I was amazed to find out that when a Windchill maintenance build is released, instead of simply downloading the Service Pack for it, you also need to download the PSI to be able to install it. If any CPS is released, you can simply download the CPS and it includes the PSI. This inconsistency results in wasted effort and confusion for the installer and could be easily resolved by providing a CPS00 release that would be located in the same place as all the other CPS releases.

PTC, please consider releasing a CPS00 version with each new Windchill maintenance build to simplify the installation process.

Fix your terminology!

Every maintenance release consists of multiple CD/DVDs that need to be obtained either through download or ordered from PTC. These maintenance releases are named Mxxx and are built on the initial release build F000.

Critical Patch Sets (CPSxx) are released specific for each build. They are installed with the PSI for the specific build that the CPS applies to.

Not sure what you are asking for because you should have the PSI needed to install the CPS for your build.

Thanks for the feedback Ben.

I'm not clear on what was wrong with my terminology, so I will re-explain.

I'm asking for consistency.

The latest current release of Windchill is 11.1 M010, without a CPS. To install it, you need to get the PSI. Prior to that (for 11.1 F000), you would get the CPS, which included the PSI. Whenever a CPS is available, you get that, when there is no CPS, you need to know to get the PSI instead.

That is NOT consistent, it IS confusing. Releasing a CPS00 would remove that confusion and would be consistent, as you would ALWAYS get the CPS.

Is that clear?

In order to install 11.1 F000 CPSx, you first had to obtain the 11.1 F000 PSI (plus about 7 other modules on disks). This is true for every Mxxx release of Windchill and they all require the PSI DVD. The PSI does not come with the CPS but with the initial build install, either F000 or Mxxx.

CPSs are released monthly to fix critical bugs. I do have an issue with that in itself as PTC has not always limited the CPS to bug fixes. I am currently fighting an issue with 11.0 M030 and CPS03 where PTC changed some code for launching CreoView that fails on my system, works for others, but is our setup fault.

Mxxx releases are minor maintenance releases, require a more complex testing setup and can introduce new modules or functionality changes. These are scheduled about every 4-8 months apart.

Sorry Ben, but your first paragraph is entirely wrong, any CPS includes the PSI. Your second paragraph is irrelevant to the topic, IMO.

I am corrected that PSI is included with the CPS.

A PSI is also required for every maintenance release, Mxxx, but it is on a separate CD/DVD and must be downloaded/obtained separately. This is done due to the size limitations of CD/DVDs. A CPS does not fit on a DVD and can only be downloaded. I then have to split the CPS into multiple DVDs to move them to my production system as it is not on the internet and cannot download from PTC.
