Enable Shared Number & Name when creating a CAD Document with WTPart

Enable Shared Number & Name when creating a CAD Document with WTPart

Tech Support Article CS61382 indicates that a CAD Document created by checking the create CAD Document box while creating a WTPart can not share Number.  It would be a huge User aggrevation saver (and probably save some time as well) if using this checkbox were to support tighter relationships between WTPart Attributes and CAD Documents, particularly when autonumbering is enabled on the WTPart.

Ideally when creating a WTPart, selection of Create CAD Document could be configured to support the following

  • WTPart Number ==> CAD Document Number ==> Creo Parameter PART_NUMBER (still have not found a way to avoid this with multiple installed shapes of soft goods (hoses for example) & Creo filename (such that Creo filename = WTPARTNUMBER.prt/asm)
  • WTPart Name ==> CAD Document Name ==> Creo Parameter PART_NAME [or PTC_COMMON_NAME]
  • WTPart IBA Attibute(s) ==> CAD Document IBA Attributes ==> Creo Parameters

I do recognize that explicit mapping of Attributes takes care of much of this, but the Number and Name would be hugely beneficial.  Currently there is much manual alignment of parameter values and with that potential for user error.

In Windchill 11.0 when you create a CAD doc from the Part creation option there is now the option to sync the CAD Doc name and number with the Part name and number

I do like this feature, but what is about the drawing? You ca now have "finally" the model or assembly number the same as the part number. How can I setup the system to have also the drawing the same number???

Björn, it is not fully practical. It applies for component drawings only where you have just one drawing! If you need multiple drawings due to different intention or different localizations you have to leave this way. Since two objects of same type can not have the same number you will need at least a suffix. I agree for the users it is very slick and convenient. But often you have also a cross reference where a drawing describes multiple parts.

Plane starts and more to come

Oliver Droop‌ I will wait for your solution. I've thought about many concepts, but still have no OOTB one, always with some customization. At the moment if a model/assembly has two drawings, the first one gets the number of the model/assembly and the second one the number and _01.DRW and so on.

This solution is the only one where the user has an overview in the workspace...

Looking forward to your reply

So wie agree that we need multiple drawings. How can we solve this?

first Option is to use a suffix like -001 as you proposed. BUT this is customizing and makes save as a nightmare

I agree that this is currently the only way to simplify navigation in the workspace and searching and was done in the field successfully

Another approach would be OOTB to use a drawings sequence by OIR and a separate shared sequence for 3D and wtpart

Now you lose some usability which could be solved by a structure/related object view in the workspace as it is availabe in several other places like package or collector. Unfortunately this is not availabe right now but will hopefully come in the future when a workspace redesign is planned to support this besten practice OOTB. Jeff Zemsky

Hi Oliver

Jop, that's exactly the problem! Since it's not that easy to have a number pregenerated in the save as wizard and copy this number to the drawing itself. I have once customized the save as "event" and it works, but this is a nightmare which I don't want to deploy to customers.

It would make the user experience so much better, if PTC would rethink the hole workspace and Creo parameter concept. It should be possible to switch Creo to show a parameter instead the filename. This would end the discussion about the number sequences. Every CAD-Document Part, Assembly, Drawing would get their number, but you could e.g. show the WTPart number in Creo  and workspace instead of three different numbers.
