Make cleaning cache easier and automatic

Make cleaning cache easier and automatic

Users of Solidworks with WGM are annoyed about the cache maintenance and his manual process. This should be automated and we suggest two different ways. One way to address the problem could be if I have a warning, big warning when I am in 80% cache used because it’s not easy to find the info warning now (windchill 10.2). In case of the total cache size used exceeds the limit, I suggest to have a message that stop your works and force to clean deactivated workspaces.

Another way could be to have a periodic task each day when the WGM is opened. The task could clean workspaces deactivated and without any change in the last 15 days.

Could be possible to have something like that?

Thank you in advance.

The same issue goes for CED Modeling and Drafting wgm, and probably for all non Creo CAD applications

As cache has a big impact on overall performance, the Workgroup Manager/Workspace should offer more visibility on cache status and offer easy, effective and on demand mechanism to clear the cache based on active dependencies only. Maybe an additional button/icon in the Workspace with some visual feedback on cache size and/or state (green/yellow/red).

You may specify client cache size limit to get automatic warning message when WGM cache size reaches to the defined cache size. As the default value is set to unlimited, which allows you to use cache at maximum amount. Alternatively you can set the cache size limit large enough to accommodate the largest data you work using cache.size (wgmclient.ini) or dm_cache_limit (Creo Configuration Editor). When Creo/WGM is launched and cache is loaded user will see a warning message when the pre-defined cache size is exceeded. The detailed information is available in CS37763 and the Windchill Help Center topic related to the option name.

The highly visible UI indicator for the current consumed cache size makes sense, we may consider it for future roadmap.

that mayb true, but there is little documented, and even less known about the behavior of the cash size. a designer is also spooked by messages like this. So a better handling and autmation of the cleanup would make it a more user friendly piece of software.

the UI indicator would be a good step in the right direction.

Automatic cache clean up actually happens when you set cache.limit and the cache size exceeds the pre-defined limit. Creo/WWGM checks the cache size and clear un-referenced cache contents, this happens on cache modification action, every 5 minutes. If user doesn't do any action, then this event is not triggered.

"Setting up Automatic Clearing of Cache" in Windchill Help Center has a bit more details.
