Priority tasks in Windchill PDM Link

Priority tasks in Windchill PDM Link

I don't have a lot of exp. in administration of PDMLink, may be this functionality already exist) If it's right i delete this idea.

When user make a promotion request, reviewer recieve a task to review it. When reviewer have a lot of tasks he can't see which task he must to check in the first time, so, he can't plan his time. It will be great to choose the level of priority (for example green, yellow or red) when user make a promotion request.

From my experience, this functionality is already available.

This is a feature our customer would like to have. The priority of the work item (Task) can only be set if the Workflow is initiated manually. Otherwise a default priority (set by wt.properties) is being used.

The user needs to know which changes have high and low priority. Especially it's confusing, that the work item priority has nothing to do with e.g. the Change Request priority.

Hi,

after having done further work on priority management, I can now add more comments.

As far as I recall (but my experience stops at WC 10.1), the task priority management can be greatly improved.

To start with, a user will get tasks from various background,  Workflow (Approval,  Change), Project Activities, Meeting Actions etc...

I can accept that the priorities will be dependent on the category of the task and it would be difficult to manage within the system the priorities across everything someone has to do.

Then comes the next issue.

Let's say you have 3 actions,  A1 at P1, A2 at P2 and A3 at P3

then you are assigned A4 and it is higher priority than A1

Either you have not yet started to work on A1 and the priorities are swifted as soon as A4 is assigned P1

so you get

A4  P1

A1 P2

A2 P3

A3 P4

but if you have already started A1 but not yet finished it  you have

A1 P1   Work In Progress

A2 P2  Not Yet Started

A3 P3 Not Yet Started

A4 P1 Not Yet Started

One can understand that once A1 is completed, the user should start with A4 as it is the next highest priority. However, at some point A2 or A3 can become higher priority so the priority must be readjusted.

Let's say I have

A2 P2  Not Yet Started

A3 P3 Not Yet Started

A4 P1 Not Yet Started

and now I need to have A3 started first. So someone should be able to change the priority of A3 from P3 to P1 and this should automatically re adjust the other priority to

A3 P1  Not Yet Started

A4 P2 Not Yet Started

A2 P3 Not Yet Started

the logic can go on and on.   The Accept Task button is very important as it is the trigger (at least for me) to tell the system that the accepter has started to work on that activity and therefore the priority of this activity can no longer be changed.

As far as I know Windchill is not capable of doing such things.  We have developed our own tool.

However, it is not perfect as things can get very difficult if the tasks are not assigned to a user but to a user group.  Where a user will pick as his next task, the one with the highest priority, so the next user will take the task with the next lower priority, But what happened when the task is not completed and the user is off sick......

My experience is when starting with wanting to manage priority by the system is to start simple and build intelligence as people get more and more used to the new way of working...

Come PTC,   your tasks management is good but can still be greatly improved

Cheers
