SIM: Extended support for custom document types

SIM: Extended support for custom document types

Hello!

While trying to implement a custom document type (non-DITA) into Windchill Service Information Manager, we're still struggling with some issues, where we think an improvement is necessary. Otherwise these aspects would be a "show-stopper" for custom document types:

1) When using DITA (here: Techinfo), you have the Resource-Manager for adding cross-references, listing elements with id's in other document (even in Windchill), etc. These extensions for DITA make the handling in Arbortext Editor quite comfortable.

However, these tools are tightly integrated into the DITA and not available for other document types.

Since these handling features, which are absolutely necessary for complex editing with Windchill SIM, are not available for custom doctypes, we see no chance, how an author could easily work with the system.

For cross references, this would mean copying and pasting ID's from the source to the target and not simply selecting everything in AE.

2) Publishing to Service Center is at the moment only possible with the default-document type (see separate product idea)

Of course we managed to implement bursting, publishing to PDF, ePub, HTML, which works very well.

But, some DITA-specific things are missing, which are - from our point of view - absolutely necessary for working with SIM. Therefor, we can of course manage our custom document structures with SIM, but it won't be a comfortable handling at all.

Redeveloping those already existing, but dita-related features take too much time and money.

We already created a separate product idea ("Using DITA-tools as the Resource Manager in non-DITA document types") for the Arbortext Editor Resource Manager. But we think this issue should be covered throughout the whole workflow of service information, so:

We'd like to see a more general approach with document types being implemented in the whole Windchill Service Information Manager Workflow when it comes to XML and publishing. At the moment it is too tightly connected to DITA.

Thank you,

your Windchill Team @ DATACOPY
