Set the preference for download mechanism based on document type

Set the preference for download mechanism based on document type

I have stored in Windchill different documents : some Office files (with attribute mapping ) and other files like PDF, IGES and so on.

I have to set File Download Mechanism Use Windchill=Desktop Integration functionality to download files because I'm using the Windchill Desktop Integration with Office and I have to guarantee the update of the text mapping with windchill

When I load a file Windchill creates a wdi files for all files !!!

It would be useful to have the way to set the preference to set the file download mechanism depending on the document type.

In this way for the PDF and other files except Office the procedure requires more unnecessary click without wdi files

This is a great idea. When the preference is flipped to WC DTI, the download action is intercepted by anything being downloaded from WC. As you mentioned, this is desirable for Office Docs and DTI controlled content, but not as nice for other items like PDF files attached to a Change Notice.

In most cases, people have uploaded various file types to Windchill, but more often than not, they are uploaded as a Windchill Document. That is why DTI is triggered for all the downloads.

Do you have any suggestions on how to divide the download action? If it's file type, that would be complicated. If it is a Windchill Object type or subtype, that would be a little easier. Curious if you have any specific use cases that would help define when and if the DTI download is used vs. the browser download.

Not sure if this is directly related or if it should be a separate idea, but I would really prefer the use DTI preference to be PC specific.  Just because I have DTI installed on my main PC doesn't mean I have it installed everywhere else.  Any place I don't have it installed I get a worthless DTI link when attempting to view documents.  Very annoying to have to constantly turn it on or off depending on where I'm working.

I agree with Tom.

Excellent idea! Can you add this as an Idea for community voting? All the preferences in WIndchill would only prompt you to download and install the DTI client. However, there are some open issues with proper browser detection of DTI when Force DTI Install is set to Yes. When working properly, it will prompt you to install DTI, but also provide a link to bypass DTI. I'll do a little homework on this one and find out where its at today.

Ah yes, now I know this one. The preference is not working with all the browser changes lately and PTC decided to implement a property to fix this for all browsers at once. Gord Mehta provides a good description of the property here: http://communities.ptc.com/message/187101#187101

However, this does not fully address your use case. The new popup does not have a link to bypass the DTI download and provide a browser download. It only offers download of .wcdti file which is what you want to avoid. I'll continue looking into this...

Hi Scott

I can describe my scenario. I have 20  Windchill Document softypes and the user can upload files with diffrent file type in the same softype and so the better solution for us is to divide the the download action on  file type

I suggest to add a preference in the section Attachments where i could set

FIle Download Mechanism="Use Windchill Desktop Integration functionality to download files"

FIle Download Mechanism DTI for extension="*.docx,*.xls, ....."

According to me bypass DTI for Office Document is not a good idea because I have to guarantee the update of the text mapping with windchill for Office Document

I agree with Tom,  we have separate computers that we use in conference rooms and this has made the management of DTI almost impossible.

Hi,

it can't be that difficult to add a check.  If download mechanism is DTI and action performed from PC which does not have DTI, use other download mechanism otherwise use DTI.

So not just for Document Types, but for content types (identified by extension)
