Simplify Upgrade Process - Less major Versions

We are using a high customized Pdmlink system an just migrated from Windchill 8.0 to Pdmlink 10.1 M040.

Only one month after we went live the new PDM Link 10.2 came out. In order to upgrade to that version one has again to setup a new system, export and import ldap and Database and so on. It would be really helpful if PTC could provide an easier way of upgrading and less new major versions that need such a complicated upgrade process.

Doing it like this the PTC Support will not be able to give a proper support for all different versions out in the field.

according to the latest information i found an update of a so called point release from 10.1 to 10.2 is an update and not an upgrade.

PTC does state that it is supposedly an update and not an upgrade, but it really IS an upgrade, since database schema has changed.  They really should call this 11.0, since a fresh install is required.  Apparently they didn't think the changes were significant enough, but neglected to realize the huge impact to customer productivity and the man-hours required to follow this process.

Herbert, do you have any lessons learned or tips from your last upgrade?  We have gone through the update process from 10.0 to 10.1, but not the upgrade process that is 10.1 to 10.2.  That is, we have not gone through a DB schema upgrade/data migration, LDAP duplication, and so on.  It seems like 1 step is in one guide, and the next step in another...
