Maybe, but it isn't logic... The reference should be stored in the Manufacturer Part. A Manufacturer Part can be added/removed/changed when a WTPart is already released. Adding second source, changing sourcing status,... has no impact on WTPart.
PTC's philosophy is that the WTPart is the part, including information about the manufacturer part. This isn't saying your idea is bad, but rather it would be a reversal of PTC's WTPart methodology.
