Support for Open Source Java for Windchill/FlexPLM

Support for Open Source Java for Windchill/FlexPLM

Starting January 2019, you need to plan to obtain and install Java as a prerequisite for installing or re-installing the PTC products that rely on Java and need to secure your own support contract with Oracle for updates to Java including security patches.

Providing support for Oracle Java and Open Source Java allows the customer to be more flexible in their solutions and would be a great benefit to everyone.

Yes, please!! If you make certain we have the needed technical information that will be critical to keeping our Windchill systems running through this change, that would be great.

Definitly! With new license spec by Oracle for Java installing Windchill on VM-Ware will cost much more because of license specs or you have to install Windchill on bare metal Servers...

Opend a new case for that (CS14673161)

"...installing Windchill on VM-Ware will cost much more because of license specs or you have to install Windchill on bare metal Servers..."

Can you clarify what you mean by this?  Windchill can't be installed on 'bare metal', it needs an operating system (Windows, Unix, or Linux).  How does running the operating system on bare metal vs. in VMware (or even Hyper-V) change the Java licensing requirement?

(Yes, Oracle database licensing on VMware can get messy.  See https://palisadecompliance.com/oracle-vmware-position/)

Hi TomU,

with bare-metal I mean you need to install Windchill on a physical Server with no virtualization. Of course with OS.

Installing an Application like Java SDK for Windchill or Oracle Database on a Virtualization is strictly defined by Oracle license specifications.

Hyper V same as VM Ware: You need to have a license for each Server you have in your serverfarm in your global environment because for example with vm ware 6 you are able to export / import your installations everywhere you want to in your organization. Not neccessary if you have NUP or CPU licenses. Problem: If you have no enterprise license you'll have do downgrade your serverenvirenment to specs of Oracle...

for example: Oracle db SEII -> one server with max. two sockets which may both be equiped with a CPU or an oracle RAC with two servers, each with two sockets but only equiped with one CPU each. This spec is enough for an oracle db but I don't have vm just for database systems....

If you use Oracle-VM you have some more possibilities but I do not now many companies using Oracle-VM.

some commet for your link: please contact some oracle license specialist... they will tell you exactly what you can or you have to do... don't trust an internet article for that matter!

On PTC Forum Europe in Stuttgart PTC told that they will first do the upgrade for Windchill 12 to Oracle JDK 11 and then check if Windchill also works with OpenJDK. So there is little hope that this will work...

Anyone done the math yet to figure out how much this will cost customers? I assume its a per user cost with a server component too.

Hi avillanueva,

you have to buy a serverlicense for your applicationserver, and by now (Windchill 11.0 and 11.1) you have to buy userlicenses for your administrators to work with javaapplets... as told on PTC EUROPE with Windchill 12 all Javaappletts will be gone... hope this will be true 😉

There is a priceliste at oracle.com available I think...

I am preparing to pull down CDs for a 10.2 to 11.0 upgrade.

The PTC provided JDK still listed under downloads for Windchill 11.0 M030.  Is a license required to use that?

I thought this would be removed from the downloads:

The Java client side JRE always required a separate download from Oracle.  I understand that now needs to be licensed through Oracle.

As I understand it, the JDK will continue to remain available for download with any Windchill versions that were released prior to January 1st of this year.  After that point you will need to get the JDK (and client JRE if necessary) from somewhere else.  That could be the paid version (if you need constant security updates) or possibly even other free and/or open source versions (use at your own risk.)

Please take a look at official statement of PTC here: https://www.ptc.com/en/support/article?n=CS294350

In the article, it is mentioned that customers have to get java separately from oracle after checking the support matrices of windchill.

For windchill 11 M030, the java version used is "java se development kit 8u102". But while checking the oracle website for this version,

i did not got any pricing details related to this version. I have referred to the official link of oracle:-
