Now in 10.1 M030 M040 ptc said:

Windchill does not support a mapping for first name. The only mappings possible are for Full name and Last.

First, Middle, Prefix and Suffix are derived by parsing full name.

Details  in the What’s New guide: http://www.ptc.com/WCMS/files/138156/en/WCNewAndChangedForThisRelease.pdf (page 26)

As of 10.1 M030, default Windchill behavior has changed to display only Full name and Last as-is from LDAP, without parsing. This is because parsed names have not been meeting customer expectations. This change is documented in the What’s New guide for that release.

It is possible for the customer to go back to displaying First, Middle, etc.  (as described in the guide above) – but again, these values will be derived by parsing and not mappings. So if making a switch, the customer must be made aware of the known limitations of using parsing. Also, as of 10.2, these name parts (First, Middle, Prefix, Suffix) will no longer be supported and only Full Name and Last will be. So the default behavior is what we recommend they go with.

Semi related, For WC 9.1, you can set wt.federation.task.queryPrincipals wt.property to a custom task instead of the ootb wt/federation/QueryPrincipals.xml.  In this task, you can modify the filter for your principal query, or add extra attributes to the query and modify the group out to alter the cn to be FIRST MIDDLE LAST if they are available in your LDAP.

I'm not sure if this is still possible in 10.1
