In workflow properties you should be able to write a short description about each variable to help define it.
To understand what a variable does for someone else's code you have to go through each block to figure out what each variable is used for if they didn't leave documentation. Anytime you work with multiple administrators or turnover it's helpful to store relavent information for changing, interfacing, or reuse.
