Workgroup manager Windows server support

Workgroup manager Windows server support

Hello.

Is it planned to fully support the workgroup manager execution on windows server ? It seems to be partially supporter as it works (withs Solidworks in our case), but it can't regulate the allocated memory, and takes more and more memory until the server crashes (15Go used only by uwgm_client.exe).

We don't have this problem on CAD workstations, but we have to use the worker on our server wich runs on windows server 2016. Support can't help with this problem, the only solution is to kill the process with helper script.

Thanks.

As of Windchill 11.0 M010 the Windchill Workgroup Manager should run on server operating systems and this configuration is supported by PTC.  See CS245930 for more info.  If the workgroup manager itself has a memory leak then I suggest creating a tech support case and pushing until it gets corrected.

The tech support asked me to open an idea (case 14684669) :

Comme stipulé par les documents que j’ai partagés avec Vous ci-dessous, la ,configuration des workers sur une plateforme Windows server n’est pas totalement supportée et connue par ses limitations et par conséquent ce que je vous propose c’est de soumettre une idée de produit pour certifier totalement dans le future ces plateformes Windows server, ci-dessous le lien pour soumettre une idée :

Again, I wouldn't accept that as an answer.  If you're using a supported operating system and a supported workgroup manager version, then PTC needs to fix it and no product idea should be required.  Push back.  Escalate the case.  Ask for a supervisor.  Get your VAR (sales person) involved.

Allready tried...

We are a very small company, we don't have any weight against PTC.

What version of Windchill, workgroup manager, and Windows Server?

Windchill 11.1 M010, Workgroup manager 11.1 M010, Windows Server 2016 ands Solidworks 2018.

Solidworks is not supported by Dassault on windows server, but PTC claims that it works : https://www.ptc.com/en/support/article?n=CS245930

And yes it works (more or less, you have to activate interactive services wich is not supported anymore by microsoft, but it's dassault problem) but the workgroup manager uses as much memory as it wants up to making the server crash.

Would it be simpler to just run this on Windows 10 and avoid the issue altogether?  A Windows 10 license is much less expensive than a Windows Server license and there is nothing on a CAD worker that needs server functionality.

Yes you are right, but as I said we are a small company and we decided to put all the Windchill stuff on one server...

It would have been easier to put the worker on a CAD machine but it means 2 computers to buy and to power 24/24, so my director decided to simplify the network architecture.

What version of Windows Server are you running, "Essentials" (small business) or "Standard"?  If "Standard", you can run a virtual machine inside the Windows Server to run Windows 10.  This would give you a separate, "clean" operating system for your CAD worker with no new hardware required (just a Windows 10 license.)

Here is a video demonstrating this process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwe8pVH4JUA

That's a good idea ! Thanks !

I'll check with our IT engineer, it could be a solution if we want a clean worker installation.
