disable the creation of lightweight files and disable the download of lightweight files

disable the creation of lightweight files and disable the download of lightweight files

When you save new models to Windchill using CEDM, there are 2 primary files stored: the content file and a lightweigt rerepesentation. If you are not using lightweight functionality, you are filling up your database with things you don't need. Creating the lightweight takes some time, which slows down the system.

Then is you load an assembly or add it to the workspace, content and lightweigt files are always downloaded upfront, eventhough you don't use them.

so if you have 20000 unique elements, your workspace will contain 40000 files! This doubles the download time of your entire assembly, while you did not ask for it.

we need 2 things:

  • one setting, which is initialised from within a preference in Windchill, that thisables the lightweight models upon save to the database
  • one setting in Windchill that prevents of downloading the lightweight model upon load. Eighter, the "Workgroup Manager Client ->  Default Load Type" preference disables the download of the lightweight file when it is set to Full, or the "Operation -> CAD Data Management -> Content Handling -> download" gets an extra entry to prevent the download of the lightweight file.

PTC has here the opportunity to double the load performance of an assembly with CEDM, by just preventing a file type from being loaded. grab this opportunity with both hands, and make hundreds of happy customers.

CEDM= Creo Element Direct Modeling.

It is not only the fact that the database is filled with unnecessary data and thus the speed suffers, it is also the fact that the lightweight data is sometimes larger than the actual CAD objects (see screenshot).
One more reason to make saving lightweight models configurable!
