On a new object it doesn't list it because it publishes only when checked in. It doesn't publish while it's still in your workspace. And if you are making any changes to something already checked in then does it show the checked in image? If so then that could confuse some people. They could have made changes but since it doesn't publish until it's checked in then they might think the changes are not there.
Which piece of information out of the thumbnail navigator are you wanting from the workspace view? Image, where used, dependents? Clicking on the Creo view icon in the actions column can give the image and dependents fairly quickly.
