"Refresh to synchronize File Name" looses functionality with Creo when Pressing Workspace button

"Refresh to synchronize File Name" looses functionality with Creo when Pressing Workspace button

In WindChill 10.2, if a Creo users presses the Refresh button or the Workspace button from within Creo, the workspace shows the out of date objects.

Now with Creo 11, the new workspace preference Refresh to synchronize File Name changes that. The default value is yes. When the value is yes, pressing the Refresh button no longer shows out of date content. The status for out of date content shows after an unknown number of minutes when the table updates by itself. The problem is that engineers are running, calling, emailing their coworkers/managers that they just checked in their work and to open it up. These other people are then saying that their workspaces aren't showing out of date information. This is causing confusion and frustration in a very fast paced work-environment.

PTC has two solutions, neither great.

  1. The user should press the Synchronize button instead. The problem with this is two-fold. The first one is that the Workspace button, showed above, does not trigger the Synchronize command, just the refresh command. So now users need to go through extra work to get the same functionality. If PTC changes the Workspace button to trigger a synchronize, that would be sufficient. The other issue is that the Refresh button is front and center on the ribbon. It would seem, to the regular user, that REFRESH should refresh the status (both local and commonspace). However, that is not the case. Furthermore, you have to now go to a drop-down menu and press another button to get that information. Again, this is harder and a LOT less intuitive.
  2. The second 'solution' is to just change the option to NO and get the WindChill 10.2 functionality. That wouldn't be an issue,  if it wasn't for Creo 6. One of the new improvements in Creo 6 is the WindChill status in the model tree, which is GREAT. This benefit would only be truly beneficial if the workspace was updating itself every few minutes in the background. Otherwise, there is no point for this improvement if the user had to manually update the workspace and then see the status of those items there already.

Please help!

Thanks!
