view only the top assembly in workspace of saved models with UWGM for Direct Modeling

view only the top assembly in workspace of saved models with UWGM for Direct Modeling

when you save a complete structure into you workspace with the uwgm for creo elements/Direct Modeling, you should be able to set the view of your workspace in that way you only see the top assemblies of the structures you saved. This will provide a powerfull overview when you work on several structures simultaniously.  If you want to continue your work the day after, you simply go to your top structure and load it. you are not bothered by other models that are in some substructure, because you only see the top assemblies, and don't get a list of thousand and thousands of parts, where your top assembly is somewhere amongst. you should also have the ability to navigate down your structure, while you are in your workspace. This is functionality that is common in Creo Elements Direct Model Manager, and is indispensable for a customer which would want to replace Model Manager by Windchill.

WE are a big user of elements direct. We are running windchill but not managing elements direct with it yet...what is your experience so far with wwgm for elements direct? Is it usable yet?

thanks for your comments

Hello Mr. Cavanaugh.

We have several customers who are thinking about the transition to the uwgm integration for elements Direct. Some of them are already testing with the product, but we don't have one in the field yet.

The product is on a level that it has become usable in a production environment. It's is easy to use, and you get the direct advantages of WT. The early child diseases are solved in the latest version (sys-id integrity, speed and memory usage), and a new 64bit uwgm client is sceduled to be distributed within the next months.

If you have more questions, just let me know.

Best regards,

Yves

this may be interesting to any CAD WGM. also for creo parametric.

Yes Mathias,

I think you hit the right spot. creo Parametric could benefit a lof of some adaptations made to the wgm comming from the functionality of Model Manager.

thank you for this comment.

When dealing with large workspaces another recommended practice is to utilize the "As a Feature Object List" filter which helps to quickly narrow the focus of the workspace listing to those items which are most relevant. This filter gets applied on top of your current workspace table view.

Yves,

I know of several customers looking for this feature for different CAD tools. I would advise suggesting this as general WGM enhancement rather than just Direct Modeling, I think you would get more support.

I am not sure if you can edit the title of an existing Product Idea, but if you can, I would remove the Direct Modeling reference, if not, I would advise recreating this idea as a suggestion for all Windchill Workgroup Managers.

The Workspace listing page is not really CAD specific, so the enhancement would probably apply to all CAD tools anyway.

Thanks,

Neil.

Hello Yves.

In Windchill 11.0 M020, we have introduced a view, like "As a featured objects list" called "As a top level object list".

What is a top-level object?

  • EPM Documents ONLY
  • Has no “where used” result in workspace.  If an object is used by at least one parent, then it is filtered.
  • It is not a family table member (neither generic nor instance)

Objects that are "referenced by" are shown.
e.g. Drawing and model are shown.  Model is not filtered even though it is "referenced by" parent drawing.

We have also introduced a column which is "Top Level Object" that is a boolean so that you can combine top-level object evaluation with other user-defined filters in Windchill Table Views.

I hope this addresses your usability concern and you look forward to this new feature in Windchill 11.0 M020.

Thanks

Jennifer

Thank you for this post. I think customers will be happy with this functionality. Unfortunately, this seems to be only for 3D, parts should be included in this view as well. but this is a start.

Hello Yves.

Could you please clarify what you would like to see?  Are you suggesting both the Part and the CAD Documents that have no parents in the workspace are visible?   Can you explain your business case about why you want to see the Part?  Are you proposing to see the Part instead of the models?

Thanks

Jennifer
