Default value for the field of type shorttext/longtext

How to set default value for the field of type shorttext/longtext.

We use the below steps, But its not working

1. Create new field of type shorttext

2. Set default value checkbox checked.

3. And set the default value "xyz...."

4. When we checked on client it is not showing default value on that field.

Did you create a new item with the shorttext field on it?

Existing items will not have their field values changed when a default value is defined, since there is no way for the product to know whether you wished to keep values that were at the old default value, or have them change to the new default value.
