Variant Selector - Support of Alias Name and Explanatory Text

Variation items (variation points and variants) are presented to the user under their model names. As these names are typically of technical nature, often following unwieldy naming conventions, users often have problems understanding what the item really means in the context of the application domain. It would be helpful to have alias names and explanatory text associated with the variation items and display them to the user in the front-end tools.

Thanks for the ideas.

The design intent of OVM in Modeler is that the variability items would use non-technical sales/marketing language for names, in contrast to the underlying system model. One suggestion would be to use the Description field to capture alternative names (although this would come with limitations).

For the explanation text idea, I’ve added a new requirement to our database (ART17-2117902, Show Variation Point / Variant description in Variant Selector). It may make sense to use the existing Description field and have this displayed in the Variant Selector.

This capabiltiy is in the product roadmap for Modeler 8.5.

Modeler 8.5 will provide the ability to see additional properties for a selected item within the Variant Selector. The properties displayed can be configured.

The ability to use an actual alias (where the value is displayed in the VS tree instead of the name) we will plan for a future release. I'll give an update when we know with more certainty.
