Description of Unreferenced Files

Description of Unreferenced Files

We've removed the unreferenced files from our cache vault on our QA system and want our designers to go into that system and check it out. However I'm look for a real word explanation of what an unreferenced file is and how it came to be. The description in the sys admin guide leaves something to be desired from an end user point of view.

An unreferenced file is a content file that no longer has a valid association to a
Windchill object. For example, a file is no longer referenced when all objects to
which it was associated have been deleted, or when a user deletes the association
to the file when updating the object

Anyone have a better definition?

Understanding what happens during a delete or purge can help. When you delete or purge, the content associated with that object does not get removed from the vault. It becomes unreferenced. The job you spoke of actually is what removes it from that vault and reclaims space. Uploads and undo-check outs can also create unreferenced files.
