Export all files from old Windchill Server

Export all files from old Windchill Server

Version: Windchill Below 11.0

Use Case: Our old server that was running our Windchill database and vault is being decommissioned and will not be replaced. I need to get all of the CAD files out of it for historical reference. I no longer have access to any of the Windchill installers or old laptops that had this software installed on them.

Description:

My issue is very similar to this post:

https://community.ptc.com/t5/Windchill/Export-all-CAD-from-Windchill-database/m-p/758411/highlight/true#M65150

However, I do not see any link to download the script that appeared to do exactly what I need. Does anyone have a copy of it? Or is there another way I can get the CAD out of the old server before it dies for good? I still have access to the old server, but I do not know for how much longer I will.

i have never done this myself, but if the response is low here, definitely contact PTC Technical Support on this issue. I am sure they have a recommendation or solution for you. If you have budget for this, I am sure there are many solution providers who could do this for you.

It may depend upon the total size of the system. Anything small can be done with a linked Creo session (of a supported version) and time. Note that removing CAD needs to be done via a workspace since that will handle any renames or application of meta-data to the CAD models. You cannot simply download from the backend or you risk the data getting all fouled up. Workspaces can handle thousands of items at once so small systems can be done easily by grabbing large chunks of CAD data and using export from workspace options. Manual however.

@MK_12247103 ,

I wrote the script you are referring to in the post as I've recently had a few companies contact me to get their CAD data out of Windchill.

I did not upload the Java utility to my post.

If you need help with this, I can be reached at windchil.developer@yahoo.com

I have written two utilities to do this.

One processes the files through a cad worker.  The other does not as it grabs the cad files directly from the Windchill file vault.

Both utilities put the cad files in a Windows folder structure that mirrors the Windchill Product/Library folder structure.

It works great.

PS I'm retired now but I still write code for companies because I love figuring this stuff out and it keeps my brain from turning to mush.😊
