How to use Purge, Archive and Restore functinality?

Hi Experts,

I am working on Windchill Archive Module in 10.2 M22 Windchill.

I have installed both the server and client of Archive Windchill. Now my problem is, I want to purge objects but I am not able to do so. Can anyone guide me how to purge an object and archive it and again restore it.

Thanks in advance.

If you are intending to use Windchill Archive for archiving EPMdoc Data from your Windchill System, then forget the idea and ask for a refund from PTC - it is as much use as a Chocolate Tea Pot. I didn't even think that PTC sold the product anymore.

There is a chance that you may get it to work for lightweight Windchill Part type data - but in my opinion this is unlikely.

The main issue that we ran into is that Windchill Archive is fundamentally limited to creating a maximum archive size of 2GB and it is not possible to work out the size of a data set that you are going to archive until the job runs and then fails as the resulting archive file is bigger that 2GB. You hence have to the keep trying and trying to reduce the data collection rule's scope until you can fit the resulting data to be archived into a size of archive file less that 2GB - this is basically impossible due to all the relationships between EPMdoc data and the size of the files.

We were adding 250GB of data per month to our Windchill System - we would have to create over 125 archives per month just to stay still at our current vault size. Unfortunately, this is not even possible to do due to the limitations of the Windchill Archive Product collection criteria rule manipulation, even if we could find the time and man power to achieve this.

We would only have to select a single Master Assembly from a single Product Context, and then all its dependent components would be selected too, and this would blow straight past the 2GB archive file size limit, causing the Archive job to fail.

How on earth are PTC expects us to archive a 10TB vault in 2GB Archive file sizes is beyond me...

Rgds

Gary

What kinds of errors are you running into when you attempt to purge?

Purge functionality can be very finicky--especially if you are purging data that has relationships with other data.

For example, if you purge a CAD Document that is associated with a WTPart then the associated WTPart may need to be included in the purge. Likewise, if you purge an instance of a family table, related family table objects will also need to be purged at the same time.

To make matters even more tricky, purging is performed in chunks, set by the Preference Management > Purge, Archive, Restore > Chunk Size Purge preference. If any objects fail to purge within the chunk then nothing in that chunk will get purged. If all dependent objects are not included within a particular chunk then the purge of that chunk will fail--there is no way to configure the chunks so that related data will be included within them. It can be very much a trial and error process to get the purge criteria and the purge chunk size right to get the data to purge successfully.
