Is it possible to auto generate a Product number when a new Product is created

My company currently has a simple numbering system for each new product/project. This currently has to be maintained outside Windchill. My question is can Windchill automate this process or is there a work around?

What does your part numbering system look like?

Is the product number part of the part numbers?

Do you create new folders for each product?

Do your products share parts?

Do you use part libraries for common parts?

Some of this may be automated through the use of OIRs and/or custom coding.

Just to make it clear. The Product number is required in the Product name when it is generated.

So for example NW0001 - New mouldings for machine.

So the NW0001 would be the autogenerated part of the Product name.

As Above

No

Yes

Do your products share parts?

Yes

Do you use part libraries for common parts?

Yes

You would have to assign the part prefix as part of the OIR for each folder in Windchill, which is not current functionality. The OIR can handle the numeric sequencing.

I am not sure if the OIR can be written to read the folder name, someone with more customization experience will need to answer that. IF it can then the prefix (NW) can be assigned. Numerically from a single sequence_id generation, you would get skipped numbers as NW00001 would be first, then BT00002, then NW0003, etc.
