Java 1.6 and Windchill 8.0(M040)

Java 1.6 and Windchill 8.0(M040)

Several users have updated their client Java to 1.6(update 11), and have noticed several of the applets(like the Create Multiple Documents) no longer function properly. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this problem. Our workaround is to have the user downgrade back to Java 1.5. Thanks!

We ran into this also. We were able to work around it by going to the
Java console and turning off the "Enable the next-generation Java
Plug-in" under advanced.

What exception are you getting?

Have you applied the R8 generic temp patch security.jar update for Java
6 Update 10 and higher? [To be clear, this temp patch is generic to R8
-- it is unnecessary for R9 and higher as the issue it addresses was
serendipitously fixed early in R9 development.]

I was told that you can have multiple versions of JAVA loaded on your
machine and the application will use the version it is programmed for.
Windchill R7 was a line in site.xconf that specifies 1.4.2_13 as the
JAVA version to use.
I have 1.4.2_13 and 1.6 update 7 loaded.
Windchill is using 1.4.2 while other apps use 1.6.

Is this a patch that has to be requested from Tech Support or is it
available on the support site?

Hi Tina,

How are you doing? Long time no see

I don't believe Java 1.5 or 1.6 is supported on Windchill 8.0 M040 but I
believe 1.5.0 is supported on M050.

There are enum java variables that just have to be reset in the jsp
pages. We had to customize a couple of pages to get rid of that stupid
dependency of that enum variable to JDK 1.4. If you don't, your
principal administrator page or most info engine pages will not work.

I'm currently having security issues with JRE 1.6.0_11 (latest version)
which is supposedly supported with Winchill 9.1 F000.

Thanks,

This has historically not worked very well at all.

With Java 6 it is starting to work better.

That said, for Windchill versions that support it /overall/ behavior
should be better with Java 6 on the client -- at least once point issues
like this are resolved.

I /believe/ tech support put it up on the support site due the frequency
of requests for it.

That's on the /server/ side. On the /client /(in applets and Web Start
applications) R8 M040 supports Java 6.

There are good reasons that /on the server/ Java 5 is not supported
until R8 M050 and Java 6 is not supported until R9.1.

On which version are you having issues? R9.1? On the client or the
server? I assume client.

Java 6, including Update 11, /is/ supported with R9.1 (on the client
/and/ server). If you have an issue there, then please report it to
tech support. [Providing a stack trace via e-mail as well wouldn't be a
bad thing either.]

I created a PTC call: 6852126

Where my browse button doesn't work on clients with JRE 1.6.0_11 on
Windchill 9.1 F000. I haven't checked all the applets. It is not a
security issue in terms of access. It's more like something is missing.
The Java Console error is:

basic: Told clients applet is started
network: No certificate info for unsigned JAR file:

at java.io.File.<init>(Unknown Source)
at
com.ptc.windchill.enterprise.attachments.applets.FileSelectUploadApplet.
actuallyShowFileLocator(FileSelectUploadApplet.java:950)
at
com.ptc.windchill.enterprise.attachments.applets.FileSelectUploadApplet.
access$000(FileSelectUploadApplet.java:193)
at
com.ptc.w...

This is all client issues

I have one 9.0 m040 test server that gives this error with the Browse
button. Other windchill servers at 9.0 m040 don't show the problem.

It also only happens for us on IE, Firefox doesn't seem to be affected.
It is affecting all the users we've tested (only checked 3 users
though). I'm looking at IE8 and jre JRE 1.6.0_11. It was reported by a
user with IE7 originally.

We noticed it in the New Document wizard. The browse button, and the
"New Local File Attachment" icon on the next page of the dialog shows
the same message in the java console.

A slight bit of investigation shows that this particular exception
traceback is due to SPR #1571243, which is fixed in R9.1 M010.

Hey Jess,

When are you releasing R9.1 M010?

Maybe, we could get patches.

Thanks,

Patrick

Those are both good questions for tech support.

Just wanted to let all who responded(with great suggestions and help!) the PTC said we cab apply the temp patch designed for M050. Tried it on our test boxes and all seems to be well. Thanks again!

Send lawyers, guns, and money...the sh!t has hit the fan!

Hello All,

Where would I find this patch on the PTC site? I did a search and there were 77 results found.

Thanks in Advance,

Kathy

Kathy,

I believe the patch is here :

<u>http://www.ptc.com/WCMS/files/85201/en/patch_8.0_all_1609956.zip</u>

However the install instructions say the patch is for M050 while the name of the patch is :

8.0-M050_M040_M030_M020_M010_F000_TP1.jar which seems to indicate it can be applied to other versions too.

Vincent

Thanks All!

On my workstation in the office I was able to disable the Java Plug In and everything works well. I have the latest version of Java 6 update 11 running in both 32 & 64 Bit Windows XP Pro, IE 7.0 and Foxfire.

Today I am working off-site on a laptop with Vista 64 Bit, IE 7.0 & Foxfire. I do not have the 'Java Plug-in' option on my Java Control Panel to disable. I uninstalled Java 6 update 11 and will try my Windchill at Java 6 update 7. Windchill 8.0 M050

Does anyone have any input?

Thanks in advance, Kathy

PS - we didn't install the patch. That has to happen at the server end which will not help me today...

We seem to run into this issue a lot. I'm trying to help support a client installation at the worksite while I am currently remote.I did check the Windchill matrix and 1.4.2_06/1.5.0_14 was the java supported, however I am actually running a higher version so it would be nice it the matrix was updated.

I don't have a problem with the multiple file find button applet on a running on a PC:

  • Windchill 8.0 M050 & Java 1.6.0_17, IE 8.0.6001.18882
  • Vista Home Premium SP2, 64 Bit

But I do run into the RMI Connection error on a laptop running:

  • Windchill 8.0 M050 & Java 1.6.0_16, IE 8.0.6001.18904
  • Vista Home Premium SP2, 64 Bit

SO my question is, what is the latest Jave compatabile with Windchill 8.0 M050?

Kathy

Time warp - I responding to Jessie and didn't even see my own posting earlier.

Who would have known that there are two Java Control Panels in Vista. I checked the control panel hidden View 32-bit Control Panel Items and there it was. So I disabled all but 1.6.0_17, un-checked my Java Plu-in and volia! I have my applet button working after only once going thru the RMI grant / deny process.

Dosn't help my co-worker back on 32 bit XP, but I'm up and running.

Kathy
