Microsoft kills FAST's Linux and Unix search biz

When I heard that Microsoft bought them, I figured this would come. We been running a Sun shop for a while but recently moved this app to Windows. I wonder if PTC will start shopping for a new search engine now.

Tony,

Well, they've got until July of 2018 to move to another engine. That would
be a longer run than Verity and RetrievalWare combined if PTC sticks with
FAST that long.

Antonio,

PTC will use the open source Apache Lucene/Solr with the next version of Windchill and Insight.

Here are some quotes about the technology:

  • “Solr is the popular, blazing fast open source enterprise search platform from the Apache Lucene project. Its major features include powerful full-text search, hit highlighting, faceted search, dynamic clustering, database integration, and rich document (e.g., Word, PDF) handling. Solr is highly scalable, providing distributed search and index replication, and it powers the search and navigation features of many of the world's largest internet sites.” (Solr Site)
  • “Lucene/Solr-based search has become one of the fastest-growing segments in the enterprise search market over the past three years, with more than 9,000 downloads per day and over 4,000 organizations using the open source software for some of industryÂ’s most intensive search needs. “ (press release)
  • HereÂ’s a list of some of the public websites using the technology.

When you say the next release you are talking about R10 or R9.2 (If there
is a 9.2)

We're just starting the planning an upgrade to 9.1 so should I wait if its
happening in the next 3 to 6 months
