Organization name change - Change it and die???

Good Morning all,

This is a silly little problem, maybe. When our Windchill system was put together years ago our orgnaization wasnamed incorrectly (Close enough for no one to bother with it for 10 years). However, being the ambitious noob admin I'd like to tidy it up. Can I simply edit the Org name and change it? If I do will mayhem ensue? I'm not sure what the ramifications of changing it would be so I haven't.

Anyone care to answer the question: "What could go wrong?"

Thanks in advance,

Bob

Anything and everything. I'm in same boat.

I've changed it a few times on test installs w/no issues - but did not do any in-depth testing.

Well, if you just want to know what could go wrong.

The problem lies in many not realizing that "Organization" name change is
confusing due to renaming the group in Windchill DS/Aphelion is a special
type of group known as WTOrganization in java parlance. You can have these
without actually having an organization contain products, libraries, and
projects.

When you want to rename an organization, you may want to rename the
OrgContainer. OrgContainer is the container/context associated to the
WTOrganization and holds your ACL's, OIR's, Products, Libraries, and
Projects.

Renaming an WTOrganization really requires the use of the Re-Org principal
tool. Set up the new Organization name first, then re-org the principals.

Renaming a OrgContainer, typically is just editing the detail of the
container in the browser UI. There is no reason you cannot have OrgName1 of
type OrgContainer related to OrgName2 of type WTOrganization under the hood,
but it'd be messy. In the LDAP, the associatedDomain attribute of an
Organization should be watched as this can cause issues also. I always set
mine to highest level, by default it's ORGNAME.domain.name and I rename them
domain.name because I am in a PDMLink multi org scenario. (May not be
applicable to you)

In general a good way to think about this is, if I wanted everyone in a
supplier Organization to have read access in another Organization, I can
goto the teams page of a Project,Product,or Library and select a role and
search for the "WTOrganization" ()group) representing members of that org.

I would advise a complete backup of your system before you try to do this so
you can rollback. In general, disconnected users, groups, organizations
could result, context/container teams may not function and you may lose
access to operate the Windchill/Intralink as designed.

Thanks to all who replied. The responses were all consistent. What I was hoping to change was the WTOrg name and the consensus was: No that would not be possible. Thanks Dave Demay and Debbie Scheider for making it clear.

We are a one Org operation, so how about this: Create a second WTOrg of the name desired and clone the structureofoffending WTOrg in question, migrate the data and retire it after? I send this one up with minimal hopes. But I need to run this problem to ground so I must ask anyway. The people who write checks want to see the company name correct.

Thanks in advance, again
