Policy for update of assembly drawings when children are modified?

What policies do you use to govern updating assembly drawings that change due to the modification of an assembly component? Do you make a distinction between fit/form/function changes of components versus cosmetic changes? For instance, a child has a hole that is changed to a slot. The assembly drawing as viewed in CreoView would now not match the component. It still functions the same, but it is not a true representation of the component and could cause confusion in Manufacturing. If a component is potentially used in 1000 assemblies that could be quite a bit of work to check-out, regenerate, save, and check-in all the assembly drawings and assemblies. Also, if that is done, do the assemblies and drawings go through a formal change process?

Where I used to work, the policy was to change higher assemblies if the changed part was visible. The assembly would always pictorially reflect the components. This may be 1, 2 or even 3 levels of assembly drawing pictorial changes. Once the changed component becomes invisible, no view shows it or hidden inside another component, the changes stopped.

Wow. That could explode the number of updates our Designers and Engineers will have to make.
