Reaffirm user name change

I see that some people suggested using the Alternate User Name fields if the user name changes. Is this still the best practice? Or is it ok to change the user name in 10.0 M040 without a problem. No AD.

Or should I just create a new user account and delete the old one. The reason I say that is this is a new user and they haven't logged in yet. So nothing is associated. We were given one log in credentials by IT and I created the account using it. Then IT changed it.

Alternate uid is fastest and cleanest approach.
