SAP Material Master Description character limit

SAP Material Master Description character limit

We are beginning a transition to SAP. One of the early things we were
told is that the character limit on descriptions is 40 characters. Is
this true or an arbitrary setting by my implementation team? PDMLink has
a limit on 60 characters for WTPart names which we have learned to
accept. It's rare that we cannot abbreviate to bring the name in line. I
can see two choices ahead of me. Mass rename all items above this new
limit or send SAP an alternate short description that is capped at 40
characters. Neither are good choices but if it is true I can see no
other options. Limiting names will be a constant CM check on new items.
Creating another description is extra work, would make BOMs appear
different in the two systems and make special rules for data translation
(linking to an IBA not the modeled attributes that are most common).
Looking for those who are also running SAP to comment.

Hello

I was also told it is limited to 40 and it is so with SAP.

I agree that it is a pain to have two different systems linked but with different constrained.

If SAP is feeding PDMLink then the limit is not a problem. If you have PDMLink feeding SAP then it is a problem.

I do not know if you can constrain PDMLink to only have 40 characters.

Best of luck.
