So what is the problem with defining all 3.4 objects as CAD docs?

Please consider this
Map ALL 3.4 file types to EPMDocument types and complete your migration
Now you do not have to consider wtdocs and their peculiar behavior.

From your experience, how do you then check out, modify and upload a MSWord (data typed as an EPM Doc) to the server?
