Synchronised backup of database and vault?

Gurus,

The System Admin Guide says that if you are using vaults you need to have fault tolerant storage because the database and file system (vault) backups won't be synchronised.

So does everyone out there have fault tolerant storage systems for both the database and vaults (i.e. you never have to restore either from a backup), or is there a backup technique or process that get’s around this issue?

(Currently WC 8.0 M40)

Depends on whether you can afford to stop the system for backups. We
kill windchill for about an hour every night so we can back up
everything
and maintain sync. I believe the issue is maintaining sync between
aphelion's database and the main Windchill database.

Kory,

Greetings...

Backup and recovery is a concern for me so I am curious about your ability
to shut down "for about an hour" each night to backup everything. I, too, am
under the impression that everything must be backed-up in sync to be
reliable, but how is that possible given the typically large amounts of data
(and, typically, multiple servers that are involved)? Could you share some
of the specifics of your installation and approach?

My environment has approximately 230GB of data in the vault and, even
though it is on a fiber-based SAN, it takes roughly 2 hours to copy from one
LUN to another across the SAN backplane; several hours if the data passes
through the server (from one mounted volume to another). Naturally, to go
from the disk copy to tape is a painfully long process. Our system is small
by comparison, so I am curious how backups are typically handled.
Compounding the problem is the lack of an adequate backup window - we have
design centers in Asia and Europe so there is only about a 90 minute block
in the early evening where designers are not actively using some part of the
system.

Mark,

We use scripts to do an orderly shutdown which preserves the sync
between Oracle and Aphelion. We do nightly incremental backups and a
full backup on the weekends. Our policy is to restart Windchill as soon
as Aphelion and the metadata is backed up. I believe there is no reason
why the vaults can't be backed up with Windchill running since they are
not synced to anything. It is potentially possible that a file checked
in during backup might not be available after a restore but the risk is
minor and users can be warned to avouid check-ins during the timeslot
alloted for the vault backup.

As part of the scripting we clear the Tomcat cache and the Apache logs
to keep things running smoothly.

We have users in Europe and Asia so we can not shutdown Windchill during
the week. Oracle and LDAP database exports and vault backup
are started at the same time. That time is 6:00 in the evening when the
US and Europe users have gone home and the Asia users are just
getting to work. If there is a failure, we would import the Oracle and
LDAP databases and then delete unreferenced files. Databases and vault
will be then synced with minimal loss of data.
