Update Supported Path

Is it possible to update directly from WC10.2M010 CPS05 --->WC10.2M030 CPS05 skipping from wc10.2M030

Update Path

WC10.2M010 CPS05 --->WC10.2M030-->WC10.2M030 CPS05 (repeative update steps)

WC10.2M010 CPS05 --->WC10.2M030 CPS05 (any chance to update directly to M030CPS05?)

Gangadharan,

To add to what Randy has posted, it is actually best practice to do what you suggest - go straight to M030 CPS05.  Don't update to M030, and then apply CPS05 afterwards.

For example, what I have done (M020 CPS11 to M030 CPS05) is download all of the M030 stuff to the computer in folder called m030, and then download CPS05 into a folder called m030_cps05.  Then what you need to do is launch the PSI from the m030_cps05 folder, not the m030 folder.  Towards the end of the PSI, you will get the screen that asks where all of the CDs are located.  That is where I enter both locations - both the m030 directory and the m030_cps05 directory.

In summary, the key is to launch the PSI from the CPS.

Look at page 7 of that document and then for 10.2 M010-CPS5 in the source release (line 11) and then note that 10.2 M030-CPS05 is a supported upgrade.

While it is a supported path, I'm not sure how you get there without going through 10.2 M030 (no CPS) first.  Tech support told me that if I place the CPS in the stage directory when installing 10.2 M030 that the CPS would be installed at the same time.  That did not happen.  I still had to manually apply the CPS after M030 installation.

Ben Perry,

There seems to be disagreement about whether or not the Update_Tool needs to be run after applying a CPS.  Obviously in the case above it would have to be run since both M030 and CPS05 are being installed together.  If CPS05 was being installed separately would you still run the Update_Tool again?

Thanks.

According to this CS149102, between step 14 & 15 in the document, update_tool doesn't need to be run in 10.2 M010, M020, or M030 after CPS-only.  It is only required for 10.2 F000 CPSes.

M030 CPS04 includes a new workgroup manager for SolidWorks 2015.  By selecting this for installation, I believe this qualifies as "adding a product".  Would you agree?

And to follow up on this, doesn't the CPS often "update" existing products (like Apache)???

I'll let a TSE or other PTC employee comment on that.  I'm not 100% sure.  Lori Sood‌ or Jarrett Oberg‌ or Chris Spartz‌?

If you are doing 10.2 M030 to 10.2 M030 CPS05, then you don't run update_tool.

If you are updating from previous date codes (M010 or M030) to  M030, then you run update_tool. This is what I did. I updated to CPS05 after the update to M030 from M010

I don't support installs and updates, but I checked with some of our guys here that support it. In general, we do not update other products, such as Apache or Java, as part of the patch install unless it is absolutely necessary. We also try to minimize the introduction of new functionality via patches--that is generally reserved for maintenance releases and upgrades.

Here is a screenshot.  On my Unix system, I have launched the PSI with the following command:

/home/ptc/MasterWCFiles/PTCSvrSftware/m030_cps05/PTC_Solution_Installer_10.2/setup

A few things about this screenshot...

  • All of the m030 CDs were downloaded to the m030 folder and extracted there.
  • The m030 CPS05 CD was downloaded to the m030_cps05 folder and extracted there.
  • At the top, the PSI routinely displays erroneous CPS numbers, but when you get to the final screen (and even on this screen) you can see that it is actually indeed CPS05.
