Windchill / PDMLink Autonumber feature

Morning All,

This is a request to anyone who has used the Autonumber feature in either IntraLink or PDMLink.

We will be migrating from ILink 3x to PDMLinkwithin the12-18months (hopefully) and we are trying to facilitate some best practices to boot. one of them is to use PDMLink to generate our part numbers. I've been told that it's possible, even with IntraLink, but I've come woefully short on reference and implementation help. So, I come to the mighty forum to ask anyone who has used the Autonumber feature for direction on getting started.

Autonumbering actually works OOTB for all parts and documents. This is a
PTC best practice, because it avoids any sort of intelligent numbering or
having to 'guess' what number is available.

There are many options for this, as you can use the OOTB 00000002 type
numbering, or you can add in a prefix if you wish for certain types. This
is all done through the OIRs at the Site or Org level.

You can also run the autonumbering from an IBA if you wish.

Not too much reference info needed. Pretty simple functionality.

But - Very profound results and impact.

We argued passionately about this for 6 months prior to deciding to use manual numbering. Seems that if you started a new company (or division or whatever) you could and should 100% use autonumber. But, very tough to introduce for an existing company with existing products (all at once - on the Monday am after migrating).

For all things other than Documents and Parts (like Promotion Requests, etc.), no problem using Autonumbering.
