Windchill upgrade inplace upgrade possible from version 12.0.0.3?

Version: Windchill 12.0

Use Case: Hello, Is it possible to go directly to Windchill 13.1 from 12.0.0.3 using the same server or do I need to migrate to a new server? Is there any guide to follow that has that scenario? Thanks in advanced.

According to this PTC document, it is not possible.

You should upgrade to 12.0.2.x then 12.1.2.x from there you can go to 13.1.2.x.

yeah, I thought it was something like that. My last upgrade was from 11.1 to 12.0.0.3 😁

Well, I can answer the upgrade in place part. That is a no. The upgrade process has you switching to a new server. The OS version often change to newer versions so you want to in the support window for those. The upgrade process is mainly a DB upgrade but since also need to install a base version of the target, you cannot operate that on the same host as production. Typically, this is a rehearsal instance off to the side. Then, take a look at what @BenLoosli linked you since it has the hops you need to make to get to 13.1.

Technically you can do the upgrade on the same physical server (if the operating system meets the compatibility requirements), but it's not very practical since you would need to shut down the production instance of Windchill while you are installing the new version(s) and then working though the upgrade process.  It's much simpler to do the upgrade on a separate physical server so production is not impacted while you're working through the upgrade rehearsals.

See from above, we did an upgrade from RH 7 to RH8 while upgrading from 11-12 using separate servers going up the dev ops stacks of environments. Back then, I had a team I was working with. Currently, there is only myself. ☹️

For upgrade, you have to consider the software matrix and supported upgrade path before the upgrade.

• Due to the difference of software matrix/Compatibility like OS, JDK, Database in 13.1, typically it is not possible to upgrade from 12.0 to 13.1 in place directly. For 13.1.1 matrix, you can refer to https://release-advisor.ptc.com/releaseMatrix?releaseId=2293 .
