So it looks like 2 things were at play with the advanced search listing of attributes:
1)logical identifiers, I had these correct
2)add the attribute to items you search in common. Or search item where all types have the same attribute you are looking for
For example:
A WT part has the stributes "location" and "description"
A doc has the attributes "description" and "color"
An EPM document has "drawing required?", "description" and "color"
That means that if I select all WT, Doc and EPM to search, the Criteria button will have the option "description" but nothing more. If I drop the WT part from the search then I will have description and color. That's how it seems to work on Windchill 8 out of the box F000 (just for testing at the very basic level),
