Assigning an appearance to an assembly helps you visualize the finished product. So, what happens when you have appearance variations? With Creo 4.0, now you can assign “appearance states” to those variations. You can even link them to assembly combined views. Let’s get the details from an expert:
In the View Manager, you can now set the appearance state of your component, assign multiple appearances to the same component occurrence, use appearance states inside combined views, and easily switch between appearance variants.
Use the Master Appearance to start assigning appearances from a clean sheet. The Master Appearance can be changed but can only be saved to a new appearance state, which will be automatically activated after it is created.
Changing the appearance of the Master Appearance. A plus next to the appearance state name in the lower left of the graphics area indicates when the master is being changed. Reactivating the Master Appearance will reset the applied changes.
Reactivating the Master Appearance in the View Manager dialog. Unlike the Master Appearance, the Default Appearance can be changed and copied to a new appearance. When editing the model appearances of copied appearance states, a warning dialog appears to confirm that you want to change the appearance for all copies of the state.
You can add a description to the appearance, and it will appear in the Description column of the View Manager.
A description was added to Appearance0002. When clearing assembly-assigned appearances, a confirmation appears, asking you to choose which appearances to remove. You can remove the appearances from the active state only or from all active and non-active states, including the default state.

The Cabling and Piping module in Creo helps you quickly create piping in your model. But what happens when your piping database has errors? Now Creo will validate your database and let you know what needs to be fixed so you can get the most out of this module. Our expert walks you through the process: With specification-driven piping, Creo 4.0 now has a tool to validate the piping data catalog files. Results grouped by status in the results dialog. Any errors found in the validation results must be resolved before you can use the piping data catalog. You can group the errors and warnings by status, file type, or file name. In this example, you can see that all the errors and warnings occur in the same file. The errors in this report are found in the tee_reducing_bw_steel.csv file. Selecting an error line, right click, and select Open Excel, and the report results open the file that has the issue. You can then edit the file to resolve problems. Opening the file in Excel. When you save the file and re-run the results, the report tool will check the files again. In the example below, we can see that we now have one error and one warning. Also note that the report shows you the line where the error occurs. Here you can see that the error occurs in line five. Once you have resolved all the errors in the Excel file, simply save and refresh the results in Creo to check that you have resolved all the issues and that the catalog is now up to spec. All errors and warnings have been corrected, so the report is empty. If you are deploying model-based definition in your company, you’ll want to download Creo 4.0. We’ve added dozens of enhancements to the software specifically to improve MBD. Among these new capabilities, we've made it easier than ever to create datum feature symbols. Now you can quickly create datum feature symbols anywhere you want, with smart, standards-based placement options that follow the latest GD&T standards. Our expert has the details. Workflows for creating and editing datum feature symbols are more intuitive. Datum feature symbols can now be created as a stand-alone annotation and do not require a plane or axis in the model. When you create a datum feature symbol, you can immediately see it in a preview attached to the mouse pointer. You can drag this preview to select the placement location. Dragging a datum feature symbol for placement. There are multiple standards-based placement options which conform to the latest GD&T standards. Once you have placed the datum feature symbol, the Datum Feature tab appears. Use the options available on this context sensitive tab for editing properties of the datum feature symbol. Opening the Datum Feature tab to change properties for the selected datum feature symbol. When you select the datum feature symbol, the Datum Feature tab opens automatically. When the datum feature symbol is no longer selected, the datum feature tab closes automatically. You can modify the placement of the datum feature symbol by dragging it. Dragging a datum feature symbol. If you place a datum feature symbol on a GTOL, you can choose whether it attaches to the GTOL frame or to the leader by choosing the option from the right-click menu. Right-click to open the context menu and select the option to place the datum feature symbol on the GTOL elbow. Similarly, if you place the datum feature symbol on a diameter dimension, you can choose whether it attaches to the dimension elbow or to the dimension line opposite the dimension text. Sometimes you have to work with geometry created outside of Creo, so we’ve added import and export to Freestyle. Our expert explains how it works. In Creo parametric 4.0, you can now share data with other sub-divisional modeling applications using an external Wavefront OBJ file. When in Freestyle, you can easily import OBJ files that were created in another application. Importing a mesh via the Shapes menu. You can define the specific units for the import OBJ file during the import process, as well as control the normal direction for the import geometry. Changing the units while importing a mesh. Once imported, the resulting control mesh is fully editable. Let's take a look at editing the control mesh and see how easy it is to modify an imported OBJ file. Selecting control mesh, we're going to mirror it about the center plane. At this point we could choose either the edge of the control mesh, a point, or surface patch. Mirroring after selecting the left half of the mesh. We’ll select a patch and then we can start dragging it down. You can see the geometry updated dynamically, in this case on both sides of the center plane. Both sides of the center plane change as the patch is dragged. We could continue this process and really evolve this design further, once again starting from the initial import OBJ file created in another application. You can also share data with other applications. Instead of importing, you can export data as a Wavefront OBJ file from the Operations pull-down menu. The exported OBJ file will contain the control mesh for the geometry on the screen. This enhancement drastically improves the collaboration with other sub-divisional modeling applications and reduces the need to remodel your design every time a change happens in another application. Have you downloaded Creo 4.0 yet? Printing parts made in Creo has never been easier. Now, you can use the software to set up a tray assembly, arrange parts, and test them for printability before you send them to the printer. Our expert explains how: To explain the basics of tray assembly, let's start with one part. Selecting the engine cover to create a tray assembly. You can prepare that part for 3D printing, then use automatic positioning and add other parts. Place as many parts as you want into the tray. Adding a fuel cap to the tray assembly. You can also create a pattern, which you can use to create multiple instances of a part. For example, select one part and then define the pattern, then select the number of parts. In this case, we are using direction. You only need to worry about the number of parts. Creating a pattern of the parts using Direction. When you click Auto-position, the system arranges the parts inside the tray. The parts are arranged automatically inside the tray. Let's create a pattern that has multiple instances of a fuel cap. Adding eight instances of the fuel cap and then using auto-positioning to arrange them inside the tray. The next thing that you can do in the tray assembly is to create a nesting arrangement. Nesting places the parts so they use as much volume as possible in the tray assembly. Use nesting when the 3D printer can handle this type of arrangement. The models have been rearranged using nesting. You can also add notes, measure parts, check the printability of a tray assembly, and much more.
