System Admin Tasks

System Admin Tasks

I put this spreadsheet together to help my a couple of my customers understand what it takes to Administer a Windchill environment and thought it might be useful to share with others. It is currently only focused on System Admin tasks. I will add other roles later if there is interest. If you find this helpful or have any other feedback please let me know.

Bob,

this is a very nice and useful overview. It would be handy if e.g.
business admin tasks could be added.

Kind regards,

Hi Bob

this is a very good document listing the different tasks. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Can you please give an indication of the size of the server this is supposed to represent. I believe the tasks of the system admin will depend on the usage of the system (number of heavy and lite users) and the number of replica servers.

Thank you

Best regards

Chris

Chris,
I know this you replied privately to me, and I hope you do not mind that I cc'd the list in the response, but I am hoping to generate some more discussion on this. If anyone out there feels this is an abuse of the list or has a better idea of how we can hold a shared side bar on just system tasks please let me know. I do not want to be spamming the group.

To answer the question now.

This is for a small environment. I am going to rework the spreadsheet a bit and provide a bit of a complexity calculator. It should not be to hard to characterize a simple, medium and complex site. I have worked at all types. Unfortunately for the small and medium size, companies there is this kind of minimal threshold of the tasks still need to get done and they still take X amount of time. The big boys do get a bit of economy of scale even though their sites are more complex. They are also better at hiding how resources are being used, so you have to be careful when someone from a large group tells you they do it with a really small number of people. They probably are not accounting for everything.

Factors I think I should include in deciding a complexity factor

Number of Seats
Deployed products
Distribution of People and Machines
- IE are there remote sites and replication involved
- Are fire walls, reverse proxies or Caching servers involved
OS - mixed or not
Oracle VS SQL Server (Not sure of the impact there)

Any more you can think of would be greatly appreciated.

Bob,

I think it is a worthwhile discussion - many of us are new to Windchill due to the forced migration from Pro/Intralink. So the duties and time involved are quite different from Pro/Intralink, which required very little care and feeding. I also would like to see some Business Admin tasks laid out similarly, as in a small environment the System admin becomes the Business admin as well.

I have a smaller list of business admin tasks - I just have not had much time to flush those out. So I took them out of the initial spreadsheet. Here is another version with a tab for that a product champion. I would really like to build tabs out for

System Admin
Business Admin
Development
Project Management
Product Champion/Steering committee lead

As those are the roles I have seen to be the most effective.

Any other ideas/roles others have?

Joanna,

I fully agree with you. I also believe that small systems (not necessary small companies) should have one person dedicated for both system and business admin roles

My problem at the moment is to be able to identify in which category we are and will be after our full implementation.

Bob's document has already highlighted some areas I was not fully aware of and hope that this discussion will cover this area of Windchill in an exhaustive manner.

Yes Bob, you are enterily right. This is and will be a very worthy discussion

Thank you all
