Ref Pattern

I have a sheet metal panel with a pattern cut in it used in an assembly, I want to add a component in the assembly an use the pattern in my panel as a ref but ref is grayed out what is causing this?

If you haven't already tried it this often works, make the first reference(s) something that relates directly to the pattern feature (it should be the first feature in the pattern also), and any references which are not directly related to the pattern come last.

To add to the other answer sometimes you have to reference the first pattern feature and sometimes you must change to order of the placement constraints to get the pattern to work. Example place the axis constraint before a mate constraint.
