Save a copy and external references

Save a copy and external references

I have an assembly, which contains a main sub-assembly and a couple of
parts. The main sub-assembly contains a number of similar small
sub-assemblies.

When I save a copy of the top assembly, pro/e complains that the main
sub-assembly references the top assembly, so I have to rename the main
sub-assembly.

When I OK to create the copy, I see a series of error messages, to the
effect that 'a part in (a specific small sub-assembly) has an external
dependency to the assembly' and I am invited to 'rename the assembly' . I
accept the suggestion (asm0001) and the copy is created.

When I open the copied assembly, each of the several similar but distinct
sub-assemblies has been replaced by asm0001.

Clearly, there is some kind of dependency between the top assembly and the
small sub-assemblies. I have tried, using Global Ref Viewer and Intralink
Relationships graph, to locate a dependency, but I can see none.

Intriguingly, if I save a copy of just the main sub-assembly, it works just
fine and I get no error messages.

I would welcome any pointers towards where to look for this strange
dependency.
