Symbols associated with drawing file

If I insert a drawing symbol in to a drawing and then delete it from the drawing the symbol still shows in the CUSTOM DRAWING SYMBOL (as if it's an instance). How do I delete this file from here?

The symbol can be deleted by "Format>Symbol gallery>delete>name". Years ago the symbol was not tied to the drawing and if you sent the file to someone at another site the symbol would not display if they did not have the file for the symbol also. That is why the symbol stays stored inside the drawing file now.
