comparing reverse engineered data with design data

Hello,
We have designed a (roughly hemispherical) moulding and had it made.
The manufacturer has had a third party measure the resulting component and
has produced an IGS file from the measurements.
We would like to compare the two sets of surface data (as designed and as
measured) and find the differences between the two, and to be able to show
the size and position of these differences on screen.
The differences should be based on a 'best fit' of the measured data to the
design data, since we do not have any well-defined datum features to locate
one set of data to the other.

Is there a way to achieve this analysis in Pro/E, and. if so, how is it best
done? If Pro/E cannot give us the answers we want, is there an alternative
approach?

We think we have figured out a way to do it if we can assume the
manufactured component is located in space using a coordinate system, but,
in practice, we have no such coordinate system.

Measuring the component again is not an option.

Sorry, WF2, M220

Why do I always remember that just as I click 'send'?

Check out Rapidform at www.rapidform.com

I have seen some very impressive demo's of their products that address this issue. They claim to be able to build a ProE model (with a feature tree) from scanned data. They seem to be targeting the market that sits between scanned information and cad packages.

hello,
just a few days ago I took a 3-day class using the ATOS system (by GOM) which could be used for this application.
It basically takes a picture of the object and generates an image that can be used to calculate the 3-d coordinates of the points that make up the surface of the object.

The data was used to generate a STL file which was later processed in geomagic.

I´m sure there are companies out there offering this service where you are, reverse engineering+cmm.

try: www.directdimensions.com

It is just necessary to take a picture of the object manufactured using your mold, generate the stl model and compare that to the 3-d cad model you provided to the manufacturer of the mold.

good luck, best regards

Al.
