midsurfaces in assembly

I would like to output shell model of a complex sheetmetal assembly to ANSYS and I can't find any way to do it. I have midsurfaces already defined on part level. Outputting shells (midsurface representation) is working fine on part level using IGES files, but I wonder if there is some fundamental reason it can't be done with assemblies? Or maybe I'm missing something?
