rotational freedom...

Guru's,

What is the deal with the rotational degrees of freedom? WHEN do they
matter and when don't they? Seems like there are times when it doesn't
matter what I do with them, that the results are the same. For instance
if I fix a surface in x,y and z, and set it free to ROTATE about x, y
and z it's the same results as if I fix all 6 degrees of freedom...???
Is there some "rule of thumb" for this?

thanks in advance...

Mechanica doesn't not calculate rotations for sold meshes. Only beam
elements and shells.

Chris

All solid elements for any FEA software cannot have rotational DOF.
Rotational constraints work only for 2D, beams and shells.

Paul,

As long as you are working with volume elements, rotational freedoms
have no influence.

This is coming out of the theory of FEM: You only have translations on
the elements, rotation of parts of your body only occurs because of
different translations of the individual elements.
