The Flatten Quilt function.

The Flatten Quilt function.

Has anyone had any luck with the function “Flatten Quilt”? This function is found in: Insert/Advanced/Flatten Quilt. I can’t understand the menus or the messages at the bottom of the screen.

The program asks for the surface, and then some kind of point is required. I don’t know what they’re talking about. I thought I could flatten a quilt that was saddle shaped. There were two curves on the surface generated by a variable section sweep.

One thing I know is that the surface can’t be flattened to one plane without stretching it. If it had been wrapped around one cylinder, then a flat pattern could be generated, but there is also a curve along the center line of the cylinder. At least the thing is symmetrical.

Of course the help files are no help, since the search engine doesn’t work even if you enter the terms you use are theirs.

James,

I've attached an article I did for a customer newsletter several years
back that covers the flatten quilt feature (and the related bend solid
feature too).

Hope it helps.

I've found out that this function won't work for me. The included pdf file has good information on the Flatten Quilt function, and explains that the function won't flatten a circular quilt on a sphere, but will flatten a rectangular quilt.

Anyway, thanks so much for the rapid responses and the good information.
