Bill,

You are not giving enough information for us to help you.

If this is a FOSI, What does your title pageset look like (especially,
how deep is your header and how much space did you set after the
header)?

<pageset id="titlepg" rectver="1" blankpg="1" orient="portrait">
<rectopg width="8.5in" nomdepth="11in" bind="lleft" xvjstretch="none">
<pageres>
</pageres>
<pagespec pgid="titlepg.recto1">
<topmarg nomdepth="0.5in">
<botmarg nomdepth="0.5in">
<leftmarg width="0.85in">
<rtmarg width="0.40in">
<header nomdepth="72pt" maxdepth="120pt" spaflow="1pi">

You need to give us something to work with instead of saying "I need
assistance ..."

What does the <e-i-c for=" your=" &quot;volume=" number&quot;=" look=" like?=" do=" you=" save=" the<br="/>content in a variable or just use it as it appears in your DTD (if you
even use a DTD)?

Bill,

I need an excuse to go cruise the boardwalk.  If you like, I'll give you a call and maybe stop by and see what we can do.

Andy,

I am sort of a novice so will attach both the fosi and dtd for you to
look at. The PTC techs have yet to solve it so I thought I might put it
out there for the experts.

Much better, Bill... this is the sort of information needed to
help diagnose the problem. However, a minimal document that
demonstrates the problem would complete the picture, as I haven't been
able to find anything obvious in the FOSI alone that would explain the
problem. If you can give us a document such as the one that produced
the title page you posted, but with all of the content cut out (down to
the minimum allowed by the DTD, substituting "Mary had a little lamb" or
whatever for any required paragraphs and such), perhaps we can find the
solution. Do keep in mind that this mailing list includes a wide
variety of people both inside and outside the country, so you'll want to
be careful to sanitize the example well.
Just to clarify, the "VOLUME NO. 2, PART 11" line is positioned
correctly horizontally, but needs to be positioned just below the
horizontal rule at the top of the page, right?

-Brandon 🙂

Bill,

A sample document would be nice. To sanitize the sample, enter this ACL
on the Epic command line and press enter:

sub -a -e '[^ ]'x'

It will change all characters to the letter "x" throughout the document.
Then save as sample.sgm and send it to us.

Brandon,

Yes I just need to position it upward to the break line IAW the TMSR.

Bill,

Your problem is that you have the title page header set to 2 inches
deep. To get the volume number closer to the top of the page you have to
either reduce the header depth or put the volumne number in the header.
I suspect that it is set to 2 inches because there is a provision for
multiple TO numbers in your doctype.

If you change nomdepth to about 0.75in the volume number will probably
move to where you want it. I would recommend that you set the SPAFLOW
to about 10 points (that's the vertical space after the header and
before the flowtext).

<pageset id="leptl" rectver="1" blankpg="1" orient="portrait">
<rectopg width="8.5in" nomdepth="11in" bind="lleft" chgmkwid="4pt"&lt;br"/>chgmkoff="4pt" chgmkplc="plftrt">
<pageres>
&first-recto-pageres;
&every-pageres;
</pageres>
<pagespec>
<topmarg nomdepth="0.25in">
<botmarg nomdepth="0.25in">
<leftmarg width="6.5pi">
<rtmarg width="3pi">
<header nomdepth="2in" maxdepth="2in" spaflow="0pt">

Andy,

Should this be the titlepg or lept1?

Your titlepg pageset is not used for the title page. You are using the
leptl pageset.

Andy,

I did as you said and the problem is fixed.

Thank You so much

Andy,

This command is a great tool for x-ing out the content of a doc.

I noticed it worked in Bill's document.

However, I've tried it in a few of my own and I get the following error:

[A12688] Region to substitute is not balanced

Part of the content is x-ed out, but as soon as Epic encounters the
error, the conversion stops.

Also, generated text is not replaced with x's. (I imagine that's
because it comes from the FOSI and can't be edited in the doc.)

Any thoughts on how I can make this work? I can anticipate needing to
use this function in some cases.

FWIW, I'm using Editor 5.3 M023 with CPA 1.3 F000.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

I don't know much about ACL and I don't remember where I found that
code. It always worked for me throughout the whole document (except
gentext) without error, but I'm still on version 5.1F. Maybe someone
else on the list can help.

Thanks, Andy.

Apparently, if I repeatedly execute the command at the command line and
just keep doing it over and over (repeating after each error), Epic
steps through the document and x's out everything except for gentext.

So about 50 iterations got me halfway through a large manual, producing
all x's except again for gentext.

That is a very, very handy utility.

Thanks, Andy! 🙂

I dare say this looks like a bug in certain versions of Editor.
I'm on 5.2 M051 and was able to get the results Steve describes with the
following Arbortext Docbook XML document:

<book>
<title>My Test Book</title>
<chapter>
<title>My Test Chapter</title>
<para>The quick <citation>brown</citation> fox jumped over the lazy
dog.</para>
</chapter>
</book>

Interestingly, when I first run the command, just as Andy gave
it, I get the error and only the chapter title and the para text before
the citation start tag is converted. If I modify the command to "sub -a
-c -e '[^b ]'x" (making the search case-sensitive and having it skip
lowercase "b"s), then it completes without error having converted
everything except the "b" right after the citation start tag.
Trying "sub -a -b -e '[^ ]'x" (same as Andy's but running the
process from the end of the document backwards) converts exactly the
characters that the original command did not. It almost seems like
Editor is getting confused about some invisible point between the
citation start tag and the "b" right after it. *shrug*

-Brandon 🙂

Lynn or anyone,

Brief update: I use Arbortext 5.1 with DTD and FOSI 38784STD-BV7

I am looking for a way to center the pages on the paper and not have the
margin shift from left to right on odd/even pages.

Any assistance would be helpful.

William,

That is controlled in the FOSI by the pagespec. I don't have BV7 (which
is part of the Arbortext Change Page Application).

That said (meaning your dimensions will probably be different:

Recto pages have one set of margins similar to this:
<leftmarg width="0.85in">
<rtmarg width="0.40in">

Verso pages have a "reversed" set like this:
<leftmarg width="0.40in">
<rtmarg width="0.85in">

To make the pages the same add the values given for leftmarg and rtmarg
and divide by 2 which will make left and right margins the same.
<leftmarg width="0.625in">
<rtmarg width="0.625in">

You have to change these on every pagespec in the FOSI.

Thanks Andy,

I will give it a try. Is it easy to update to 5.3 from here?

Bill,

I still need a good reason to visit the boardwalk. If it isn't working, drop me a note and I'll come by and see if I can help you.
