On Windows 11, double-clicking an XML file opens Arbortext Editor instead of Styler

I installed Arbortext Styler 8.3 on Windows 11 and the application launches correctly. However, when I double-click an XML file from Windows Explorer, Arbortext Editor opens automatically and the file fails to open due to a licensing issue. How can I configure Windows so that XML files open directly with Arbortext Styler when double-clicked in Windows Explorer?

I think these basic windows setting if I am not wrong.
You need to right click on any XML and click on properties

then from this below section, choose the appropriate "Opens with Application" in your case Arbortext Editor and Styler

Hit apply and Ok.

From next launch, if you double click the xml it should get launched using Styler or Editor as per your selection choice.

This seems to be more a licensing issue than an association issue.

What License type do you have ? Editor or Editor with Styler?

Are you able to open Arbortext Editor and/or Arbortext Editor with Styler via the Icon on your desktop?

  • Go to Windows > Start
  • Use the following command line to open the software - please fill with your path to Editor:
    • "[EditorInstall]bin\x64\editor.exe" -styler
    • Does Editor with Styler open?
      • If Editor with Styler opens with no licensing errors - please jump to the next section to change the xml file association
      • Or do you get a Licensing error?
        • If it is a Licensing error you need to check the following:
          • License file is installed correctly
          • You have a License for Editor with Styler - please note this is a different license to standalone Editor
          • The PTC_D_LICENSE_FILE is pointing to the correct file
  • To change the default 'Open with' program:
    • Go to Windows > Start
    • Execute regedit
    • Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
    • Scroll down to xmlfile or sgmlfile
    • Expand it
    • Expand shell
    • Expand open
    • Select command
    • Right click on item in the right hand pane and select Modify
    • Either add or remove the option -styler EG:
    • "[InstallPath]bin\x64\editor.exe" -styler "%1"
    • Click OK
    • Exit regedit

You may need to raise a case with PTC Technical Support if you are unable to resolve with the above suggestions

Kind regards
