I am not using styler, but in FOSI we have it set up so that the 1st occurrence of the footnote appears like this:
<footnote footnote-symbol="1asterisk" id="m123n456">
<para>Footnote Text</para>
</footnote>
If in the same document the same footnote text is used, we use <footnoteref linkend="m123n456"> instead of the whole footnote. This footnote ref is then replaced witha symbol that matches the symbol specified by the linkend id.
The resulting output is 1 occurrence of the footnote at the bottom of each page the footnote or footnoteref appears on.

We have footnotes set up with Styler, but we are running into problems
where we have multiple references to a footnote on the same page. In
these cases, the footnote gets output the same number of times it is
referenced on the page. Is there a way to only output the reference
once per page?
Many thanks,
