Direct Modelling and Parametric Modelling

I hope this is an easy question for you.

If my R&D team create a model (for a new innovative product) in Direct Modelling and then once the concept is finished, I want my designer to create multiple variant and maybe having this new product configurable. Can I convert this model created in Direct Modelling into a Parametric Model ?

If so, how easy is it ?

if not,  does that mean I must start with Parameter modelling and since I do not know from the upfront if a new product will have variant or not, then to avoid the risk of not being able to convert, my R&D Team will always use Parametric Modelling even if at that stage it is not as efficient.
